Thank god spike took over and made moonlight syndrome non canon.

This video only furthers my belief that Suda 51 is a hack who makes (mostly) bad unenjoyable games and mostly gets credit for being an incisive and utterly incorrigible writing troll. He stated that the tonal shift was because he found "the human capacity for evil much more interesting" and yet the entire story revolves around a wish corrupting god with totally vague and undefined supernatural powers. You could argue Mithra is just a plot device for showing what humans would really act like if given the chance but given how much of the story is a direct result of Mithra manipulating and fucking with everyone in ways they most certainly didn't want and intend, the effect is that Suda wrote a less human and relatable story than anything in Twilight Syndrome. Not to mention, "Dude dating a chick can't handle that her brother also wants to fuck her" isn't exactly the most relatable basis for a human storyline. Even you who seems a lot more sympathetic to Suda seem to struggle to explain how this 1) the story succeeds or 2) the game is fun. And like, I have no problem with anyone enjoying Suda's work but I just think it's funny how even in a 2 and a half hour video essay trying to hype up the man, it really struggles to sell Suda's work. Cool video nonetheless. I'm sure it took a lot of work. (EDIT: Also I say all this as someone who actually really enjoys David Lynch films and other surreal video games. I am totally cool with a piece of art being more about creating a vibe than having an easy or even coherent explanation. But I also think that Suda's work consistently creates the wrong kind of vibes: self-important, condescending, and utterly bleak. It's the sort of art that assumes everyone, including the audience, is an asshole. And that's a common attitude for High Art in the 20th and 21st century to have. But it's not my thing. I prefer art that fully acknowledges the ugliness of the world and the clawing, desperate depravity of existence... but still gives a reason to live and fight anyway. It's just too easy to say "the world and everyone in it sucks" and that's what Moonlight Syndrome does.)

I need No More Heroes and Danganronpa to do a crossover. Not just because DR2 pays homage to the Syndrome series, but just bc the worlds of NMH and DR are both absolutely bonkers and it feels like it could be fun to mash them together if done right.

I was not prepared for how bizarre Moonlight Syndrome would be after how traditional Twilight Syndrome 1 and 2 sound.

In early 2006, my parents let me get a copy of Haunting Ground on clearance for 20 bucks from Walmart with my Christmas money. It continues to be my favorite horror game of all time, and I am glad people are giving it the attention it deserves.

I love baroque. I played it on PS2. I dont remember if it was made for ps1 or 2 but its a great game. Its almost exactly like dark souls, except that you dont get to keep ANYTHING. The only real thing i dont like about it is that you never know if what you're doing is right. you just go deeper and deeper and talk to people. But its atmosphere is wonderful. I love it. I only recently played it because a friend gave it to me. He hisself doesnt like dark souls things. I love that this is like a chess 3d hack and slash with RNG weapon drops and leveling up. Its always a different experience everytime. The levels are never the same. Its great.I would rate it a 9/10. it doesnt explain things well is the main drawback. without reading a manual, im 95% sure the game is basically impossible to beat. From seeing how it looks on the saturn, it looks really bad. You cant see anything including if your attacks are properly ranged. This would destry my experience. I will agree, though, the music does seem very interestingly different. its too bad they didnt have an option to choose different soundtracks.

Last I heard, modders have managed to get Twilight Syndrome working with custom injected text, so a fan translation might not be too far out (though it could still be a matter of years, these are pretty text-heavy games). The bits in the Denpa chapter where one's appliances start speaking to them seems a lot like a certain sub-genre I've heard of called Denpa Fiction; I'm a bit fuzzy on the particulars, but as I understand it, it tends to be about anxieties of the modern world, manifested typically in individuals who believe they're receiving messages directly to their minds from radio waves. I'm a bit surprised the topic hasn't come up in a previous Dungeon Chill video, or that I've missed it if it already has.

My favorites ps1 psychological horror survival game. I hated what they did to the series with the second game.

this is insane, I've never even heard of this game. The art and subject matter are so my 90's edgelord vibe. With maybe a different style of presentation I could see a lot of people being into this.

The fireplace scene alone makes me want to experience this whole game. I never mew shadow hearts had a prequel! Gives me another reason to get back into that series. I’m impressed with the mocap for sure. It still holds up pretty damn well. Some scenes seem like something that would be made today. Like it’s an artistic choice to use the low poly characters. Also, Koudelka revealing the meaning of Zlato at the end brought a tear to my eye 😭

The whole "You need to read the cut chapter included in the artbook to understand the story" reminds me of the "Jaco's Report" included in the Killer7 artbook, as it was also cut content that made the story easier to understand.

One piece of weird cross franchise information that could be added here: Danganronpa 2’s second case features the characters being shown a retelling of a murder as a motive for the next killer to act. The way this murder retelling is framed is as a playable arcade cabinet called Twilight Syndrome Murder Case. The gameplay is very similar to that of the Twilight Syndrome games, which checks out given Danganronpa is made by Spike Chunsoft. Just a neat little connection there.

Played thru it recently. It's extremely simple mechanically and the story is short but the atmosphere was unmatched. Thoroughly enjoyed it

great video, it's so cool to see some content that's almost completely uncovered in the west. my read on these games is an interesting case study on the beginnings of a wildly overrated creator.

wow another game I never knew existed

I feel bad for TS characters, it seems like such a nice and comfy horror game with some really cool mood settings and then MS just comes along and kills everyone. Going from horror and urban legends to "psychological horror" could be a cool thing but then there's a god that can warp reality, and of course the god is a little bastard kid which is always so stupid and not scary at all. He could've had the modernization be a theme where the ghosts and supernatural stuff just decreased over time and the main cast could've been investigating a cult or something instead, make it more grounded. Great video though, thanks!

Just to point out, the heart meter in the second game is likely supposed to be a planchette, an item used to communicate with "the other side" or aid other psychic tasks. Think of the token from a Ouija board.

Also if I had to guess I would assume the kemulians are actually the kemur which are also from ultraman.
